History

Interestingly there is no clear evidence of the discovery of shilajit. Indian ancient Ayurveda books claim that monkeys surrounding the Himalayas used to lick a black gooey substance coming out of rocks.  Hilly villagers and tribes living around the Himalayas felt the energy oozing out from monkeys after they licked this black tar-like substance. Villagers too started taking this substance and felt their energy, strength, and fitness levels improve. Shilajit has been found in the high mountains of Russia, Siberia, the United States, and Saudi Arabia. Momiji (means ‘saving body’ or ‘protecting organism’) as in shilajit found in the Altai mountains of Russia has also been called as the ‘lungs of the mountains’ by some people. Russian bodybuilders used momijo to build endurance strength and muscle. The Burmese call it Kao-tui which implies ‘blood of the mountains’ and the Tibetans call it brag-shun meaning ‘juice of rock’. Himalayan shilajit develops over centuries from the slow decomposition of plants and stone sweat (called in Arabic as arakul-dzhibol – ‘sweat of mountains’) when the ice melts. The high content of minerals, and 30-70% of the fulvic and humic acid (%age varies depending on the height and processing) in Himalayan Shilajit, promotes blood flow and CoQ10. The Ayurveda and Siddha systems of medicine use shilajit in a wide range of medicines. Studies on shilajit chemical constituents, therapeutic and biological properties have been studied scientifically by Banaras, Varanasi, and Gujrat Universities. The research papers collated information on biological, antioxidant, immune-activity of shilajit for further biomedical research to find if any was related to Rasanayaan potential.

“Shilajit from the Himalayan range of Indian sub-continent found that the curative potential of Shilajit is documented in the ancient books and was used to treat ailments since antiquity days. A major portion of shilajit, the blackish-brown raisin consists of humic substances. A no. of Clinical trials has shown many of its pharmacological properties”. (2)

Glo Power Shilajit –GPS} is a black tar-like paste. Himalayan shilajit consists of approximately 85 different minerals that our body needs. It also contains proteins, vitamins, nutrients, and trace minerals. Originating from the Himalayas 14000-16000 ft. above sea-level, our blend is A grade quality of pure Himalayan shilajit. Himalayan Shilajit is said to boost your metabolism because of its bioactive properties.

Himalayan Shilajit is one pure plant food full of essential nutrients and one of the best natural superfoods/ and or supplement, besides being a super-antioxidant. The outer covering of the trace materials provides a barrier to stomach acids and thereby, preventing the destruction of good enzymes. This process aids in the smooth absorption of nutrients moving through the digestive tract. Himalayan shilajit facilitates and improves gut health and aids in improving good bacteria to spread efficiently and formulate healthy Microbiome conditions besides improving the lack of libido and sex drive.

“All shilajit fractions exhibited dose-dependent complement-fixing activity in vitro with high potency. A strong correlation was found by two scientists between complement-fixing activity and carboxylic group content in the shilajit fractions and the fulvic acid sources. Extracts of shilajit contain high amounts of the fulvic acid and are responsible for the many therapeutic properties of shilajit. The data provides a molecular basis to explain at least part of the beneficial therapeutic properties of shilajit and other hemic extracts.” (3)

“the Phyto complex known as shilajit is mainly composed of humic substances. In one of them, fulvic acid is known for its properties such as anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, and memory enhancer. Novel investigation indicates that the fulvic acid is an anti-aggregation factor of tan protein in vitro which projects fulvic acid as a potential Ant-Alzheimer’s disease molecule.” (4)

“Fulvic acid inhibits aggregation and promotes disassembly of Tau fibrils associated with Alzheimer’s Disease”. (5)

The structure of the fulvic acid enables chelating properties that can assist in transporting some of your nutrients, especially minerals, to cells and remove deeply embedded toxins from your body. Shilajit containing as low as 20% of the fulvic acid is used in ‘Ayurveda’ medicine for almost 3000 years. Fulvic acids are now available in concentrated form, ready-to-drink beverages, and pills.

You can apply shilajit mixed with saline solution to your inflamed muscle or bone area for 3-4 weeks. Shilajit and its active constituents have been reported to possess an array of pharmacological properties including adaptogenic, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, anti-diabetic and neurological properties

7.Burns and bruises: you may apply shilajit paste on burns and bruises or wounds for a quick recovery. Himalayan Shilajit helps fix damaged cells, regenerates, and rebuilds. Antioxidants in shilajit aid in rebuilding damaged cells and molecule membranes.

8. Detox: shilajit acts as a great detoxification system due to the huge amount of antioxidants and the presence of zinc and other trace minerals and antioxidants that push out toxins.

9. Regeneration of cells: shilajit contains large amounts of iron and magnesium and this is likely to help your cognitive functions due to the regeneration of body cells and your brain neurons. A word of caution, you need to give a break after a few months of intake so as not to suffer from an overdose of iron.

A sample of Momijo (Shilajit) from Antarctica was tested by two scientists in          the Netherlands: “They concluded that this preparation of mojo was a                  distinct neuroprotective activity which is very likely due to the content of              glycerol ether derivative.” (6)

10.Better Sleep: Magnesium is a wonderful chemical, naturally found in shilajit. Magnesium helps to relax muscles and relieves you from cramps and gives you a better quality of sleep. Furthermore, iron in our blood supplies oxygen to our cells and tissues. The presence of Vitamin B (especially B6) series in shilajit also helps in better quality.

11. Cardioprotective: potassium content in shilajit, according to some studies, has a positive effect on heart health. Shilajit is a cardioprotective as it reduces increased levels of cholesterol in the blood and enhances the removal of cholesterol with the bile. “Evaluation of cardioprotective activity in rodents using Isoproterenol model revealed that the shilajit treated group showed significant changes to cardiac markers and other enzyme levels, such as aspartate transaminase, creatinine kinase, and lactate dehydrogenase. This indicates that shilajit acts as a cardioprotective agent in preventing myocardial necrosis." (7)

12Radiant and smooth skin: Himalayan shilajit naturally improves and nourishes the skin through the regeneration of cells. The nutrients in shilajit, nourish, and vitalizes skin in a manner that your skin will become smooth, translucent, and glowing. Three important minerals & nutrients in shilajit provide you with glowing skin results:

  • Selenium & Zinc will provide you protection from UV rays and or radiation.
  • Copper will provide your skin elasticity, collagen, and elastin, repair your peptides through melanin, copper, and make it stronger; this hugely improves skin health. Your skin becomes radiant and smooth besides feeling tighter and healthier (See Russian study in the blog on shilajit: Research guidance).
  • Manganese will provide you enzymes and produce hormones. Manganese produces antioxidants, Super -Oxide Dismutase (SOD), and minerals that will protect your skin from free radicals and toxins (from under your skin). Manganese, therefore, is anti-aging or age slowing mineral that reduces wrinkles. Manganese helps in giving health and longevity.

13Immuno-modulatory activity: Himalayan shilajit supports antibody production in your body. It will also eradicate toxins and microbial growth. This process will help to build and boost your immune system.

“Shilajit (Momijo in Russian) has a broad spectrum of biological action: anti-bacterial, bacteria-static, anti-inflammatory, choleric, ant-toxic, and anti-stress. Due to its composition (Momiji), Shilajit stimulates many enzyme systems of the body and supports a variety of immunological processes”. (8)

14.Trace Minerals: present in shilajit help bonding proteins in your body. It is better to take trace minerals like potassium, magnesium, manganese, calcium, sodium, chlorine, phosphorus, iron, zinc, copper, iodine, chromium, molybdenum, selenium, cobalt, nickel, bromine, boron, silicon and vanadium. from plant-based sources as they are easier to absorb. Synthetic supplements are not helpful unless you take some more supplements to have a good absorption rate for the trace minerals that our body needs.

We are far more compatible with ingesting our trace minerals from plants and other dietary sources as these forms of minerals are bound to organic acids, salts, and other substances that allow for easier absorption. Besides, the size of plant-based trace mineral particles is usually much smaller than that of inorganic trace minerals. This adds more absorption to the natural plant trace minerals’ high bioavailability.

15.Super-antioxidant:  If Himalayan shilajit is processed ethically and free from all dangerous metals and harmful bacteria and toxins, the high antioxidant content can eliminate and may help remove heavy metals from your body. You need to take all shilajit products intermittently for a few months and then discontinue, mainly to prevent an overdose of metals.

Shilajit: A natural Phytocomplex with potential Precognitive Activity, the paper found:  “Recent studies have shown 60-80% of the fulvic acid composition plus oligo-elements including Selenium of anti-aging properties”.

Other studies in Chile have evidence “an ORAC index between 50-500 Trolox units 1g of material, which is substantially higher than Noni and Blueberries (Quinteros, et.al. unpublished data). Therefore, Shilajit seems to be a powerful antioxidant Phyto complex”. (9 &12)

16. Life Longevity: The Hunza valley in Pakistan with a small population of 87000 (2017 data) thousands live a healthy life as long as 120 years. The Hunza valley hill tribe has inculcated shilajit in their daily diet. There have been women in this village who have delivered children at the age of 65 years

“There is a community of 87,000 people living in the mountains of northern Pakistan who are secretly laughing on all of us who think that the average life expectancy of human beings is 60 years. The people of the Hunza community have an average life span of 120 years and in some cases, they live up to 160 years. Thanks to their healthy way of life, they look young and beautiful even in the later years of their life. The women of the community can give birth until the age of 65. Surprised?” (10)

“The antioxidant – reno-protective effect of the preparation is expressed as the transcriptionally active chromatin fraction and is correlated to the mortality reduction of the experimental animals”. (11)

“Shilajit is a potent and very safe dietary supplement decomposition of plants) restoring the energetic balances and potentially able to prevent many diseases. Recent investigations point out towards its ability to prevent several diseases and medical applications towards the control of cognitive disorders associated with aging and cognitive stimulation”. (9,12)

17.Pharmacological properties: A huge amount of research has been carried out in different Indian universities regarding the pharmacopeias and formularies. Therefore, shilajit is used in many Ayurveda modern medicines. The high content of Vitamin B6 is said to improve your skin and uplift your mood. On the other hand, Vitamin B12 is likely to make your cells healthy and improve your DNA. There is some content of carbon 60 (C 60) super-antioxidant present in shilajit. No exact measure or percentage of it is scientifically available. Shilajit contains fatty acids, benzoic acid, and vitamins B 1 and B12 besides other different antioxidant compounds.

Geographic and environmental factors determine the composition of shilajit. Chemical properties of shilajit have been summed up by research scholars as three major compounds in the form of

(a)DibEnnzo-alpha-pyrones (DBPs) also known as urolithins in free form as well as conjugated with chromoproteins, the fulvic acid with DBP core nucleus and humic acid.

(b) Dib Enzo-alpha-pyrone chromoprotein (DCPs) are antioxidants in Himalayan shilajit and they support C60 energy-boosting effects.

Depending on the processing of Himalayan Shilajit (free from toxic metals and naturally sun-dried quality, the DBPs and DCPs form±10-30% of shilajit. The antioxidant properties are the result of dib Enzo-G-pyrones and fulvic acid.

18. Anti-tumor activity: antioxidants are a major defense against radical-mediated toxicity by protecting damage caused by free radicles. “Inhibition of free radicle generation can serve as a facile system for identifying cancer preventive agents.” (13)

“Shilajit extract inhibited the proliferation of the Ehrlich ascites tumor cells significantly.” (14)
